Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6A supports 10 Gbps over full 100m runs and is the modern standard for new offices. Cat6 is fine for most PoE APs and 1 Gbps runs but limits future upgrades. Most LA new-construction spec Cat6A.
How many drops per workstation?
Two is standard (data + spare), plus one drop per phone (if you still use physical phones), one per AP, and dedicated runs for AV/conference gear.
Do we need fiber to every desk?
No — fiber to the desk is only used in high-performance environments (post-production, trading floors). Most offices use fiber for building backbone and Cat6/6A to the desk.
What's the difference between MDF and IDF?
MDF (Main Distribution Frame) is the main telecom room — where your ISP hands off and your core network gear lives. IDFs (Intermediate Distribution Frames) are per-floor or per-zone closets that connect back to the MDF via fiber.
How long does an office cabling job take?
Small office (10–20 drops): 2–4 days. Mid-size (50–100 drops): 1–2 weeks. Large campus: several weeks with multiple crews.
Union vs. non-union in LA?
Many LA commercial buildings require union labor (IBEW). Your landlord and GC will tell you. Union work costs more but is often the only option in Downtown, Century City, and major commercial buildings.
Do we need cable certification testing?
Yes — professional installers test every cable with a Fluke tester and provide a report. This is your warranty on the physical layer. Insist on it.
Should we plan cabling before or after MEP?
Together with MEP is ideal — cable pathways affect ceiling design, conduit placement, and firestop requirements. Bring your cabling contractor in during design, not after.
